If they’re hardened or deteriorating, replace them when reassembling the tank. Remove the two bolts and examine the gaskets. Slip an adjustable wrench on the nut on the underside of the tank and loosen each bolt with a wide screwdriver. Set the tank on a rug on the floor, and remove the tank gasket.

With the bolts removed, the tank is loose, and you can remove it by grabbing it on both sides and pulling straight up 4. They come as a set at all hardware stores. If either gasket has hardened or is breaking apart, you’ll need to replace both bolts and gaskets 3. Remove each of the two bolts holding the tank to the base and examine the condition of the gasket under the bolt 2. If your tank uses a ball float, removing the float and arm isn’t absolutely necessary, but it will make the job go faster. The tape will tell you how far to screw the float back on when reassembling 1. If your toilet has a float and arm, tape the position of the float on the arm, remove both, and set them aside. To start the repair, drain and dry out the tank. Both conditions will create a leak under the flush valve or between tank and bowl and will require replacement of the overflow pipe and tank gasket.

With the wax ring softened to room temperature, peel off the wrapping and stick it to the base opening of the toilet, with the rubber gasket portion pointing upward (it will be pointing downward into the toilet drain when you install the toilet).Every now and then an overflow pipe will crack or the flapper valve seat will become so ragged it needs to be replaced. To apply the wax ring, first, turn the toilet upside down on a soft surface to prevent chipping or scratching of the porcelain. If the gap is too wide, use a flange extender ring to adjust the gap at the bottom of the toilet. This beefier ring will ensure a tight seal, provided you have the right distance between the toilet and floor. However, one improvement you can make is to discard the budget wax ring provided by Kohler and instead buy an extra-thick wax ring, such as one from Fluidmaster or Lasco for about $8. This system has been in place for many, many decades, and although there are now waxless silicone seals available (Sani-Seal is one brand name), a wax ring is still the default method and one that works very well. Most toilets are installed with a wax ring that fits over the bottom drain opening (the horn) to create a seal between the bottom of the toilet and the drain pipe. Then, put on a pair of gloves and remove your existing toilet before continuing to the next step. Instead, sever the tape with a utility knife, thereby preserving the instructions.įirst, turn off the water supply to your existing toilet (or the main water shutoff valve to the entire house).

If you rip off the tape, you risk tearing off the instructions. Tip: The installation instructions for a Kohler Highline toilet are printed on top of the box, split by the box flaps.

The Kohler Highline toilets are a series of so-called "comfort-height" toilets in which the user sits at the same height as in a standard chair.
